Entity Authority: How to Become the Answer AI Gives
AI doesn't recommend keywords — it recommends entities it understands and trusts. Here's how to become one the machine knows by name.
For years, search was a game of words. You picked the phrases customers typed and worked to match them. AI answer engines changed the unit of the game. They don't think in keywords — they think in entities: distinct, real things in the world and the relationships between them. Your business is either one of those known things, or it isn't. Becoming one is the foundation of showing up in AI answers.
This is the concept I come back to most with local businesses, because it reframes everything. You're not trying to rank for a phrase. You're trying to become a thing the machine understands well enough to recommend by name. Let me make that concrete.
What an entity actually is
An entity is a specific, identifiable thing — a business, a person, a place, a product. The word "apple" is just a string of letters, but the fruit and the technology company are two different entities, and a good model keeps them separate. Your business is an entity too: a particular company, in a particular place, offering particular services, with a particular reputation.
The difference between a keyword and an entity is the difference between a label and a known quantity. A keyword is something a page mentions. An entity is something the AI understands. When you're an entity, the model can hold a full picture of you in mind — what you do, where, for whom, how well — and match that picture to the right question.
Knowledge graphs: how machines store what they know
A knowledge graph is how AI systems organize entities and the relationships between them. Picture a web of nodes: your business connects to your location, your services, your industry, your reviews, the people associated with you. Each connection is a fact the system holds with some level of confidence.
When your business is well-represented in these graphs — clearly defined, richly connected, consistently described — the AI has a sturdy structure to reason from. When you're barely present or your connections contradict each other, the model has little to work with and defaults to a business it understands better. Being in the graph clearly is the goal. Being absent or muddled is the problem to solve.
Authority is identity plus trust
Entity authority has two halves, and you need both. The first is unambiguous identity: the model knows exactly who you are, with no confusion about your name, your location, or what you do. The second is earned trust: the model has good reason to believe you're excellent at it, because the wider web says so too.
Identity without trust makes you a business the AI knows but won't vouch for. Trust without clear identity makes you a business the AI would recommend if only it could pin down who you are. Authority is both at once — known, and believed.
You don't win AI answers by being mentioned more. You win by being understood completely and trusted deeply. That's entity authority.

How to become an unambiguous, trusted entity
The work is methodical, and it compounds. Here's the shape of it:
- Define yourself with zero ambiguity. Use the same business name, location, and service language everywhere, so the model never has to guess which "you" it's looking at.
- Make your facts machine-legible. Structure the details of your business so systems can read them cleanly — who you are, what you offer, where you serve, how to reach you.
- Connect yourself to the right things. Associate your business with its real place, industry, and services so the graph wires you into the correct neighborhood of the world.
- Earn corroboration. Reviews, citations, and credible mentions are the trust half of authority — they turn a known entity into a recommended one.
- Keep it consistent over time. Authority isn't a one-time push. A steady, coherent presence tells the model your identity is stable and real.
None of these are exotic. What makes them powerful is doing them together and keeping them true. A business that's clearly defined, correctly connected, and independently corroborated becomes an entity the AI can recommend without hesitation.
Why becoming the answer is worth the work
When you're the entity an AI reaches for by habit, you're not competing for a slot in a list — you are the recommendation. And that position is sticky. The same signals that made you the answer are the ones a competitor would have to out-build to replace you: clearer identity, deeper trust, longer track record. That's not a ranking you can be bumped from on a Tuesday. It's a position you've earned in the machine's understanding of the world.
Start by asking what the AI already knows about you. Pose the questions your customers ask and read how you're described — or whether you're named at all. The gaps in that description are your roadmap to entity authority. Close them, and you stop chasing visibility and start owning it.
Questions Bodhi Hears Often
What's the difference between a keyword and an entity?
A keyword is a phrase a page contains; an entity is a real thing the AI understands. Old SEO matched keywords to queries. AI answer engines reason about entities — your business as a known quantity with a location, services, and reputation — and recommend the ones they understand and trust. Entities are the unit that matters now.
Do I need special technical work to get into a knowledge graph?
Some of it is technical — structuring your business details so machines can read them cleanly helps a lot. But most of it is disciplined clarity and consistency: describing yourself the same way everywhere, connecting yourself to your real location and services, and earning genuine corroboration. The structure and the substance work together.
Can a small local business really build entity authority?
Yes — and in a defined local market it's often easier than for a sprawling national brand, because your identity is naturally focused. A clear, consistent, well-corroborated local business can become the entity an AI recommends for its area. Scale isn't the requirement. Clarity and trust are.
